What to give a 3-year-old, based on what they can already do

A 3-year-old changes from one month to the next: in September they jump with both feet, by December they pedal and in March they tell you the plot of an entire film. That is why this guide isn't organised by trendy toys but by skills: for each thing they are learning, the gifts that go with it and the ones best left for later.

Moving: balance, climbing, pedalling

At 3, the body runs ahead of caution: they race about, climb everything and want to get on anything with wheels. Gifts of this kind get used every day, are outgrown within a year and nearly all of them are easy to pass on.

  • A balance bike. It's the star gift at 3: they learn to brake with their feet and to balance, and around 4 or 5 they move on to a pedal bike without stabilisers. With a helmet from day one.
  • A three-wheeled scooter, steadier than a two-wheeled one. If they already have a bike, there's no need.
  • A soft ball, a fabric tunnel or some hoops to set up obstacle courses in the hallway. Cheap, and good for whole rainy afternoons.
  • What can wait: roller skates and a pedal bike. Their balance isn't up to it yet, and what doesn't work first time gets abandoned.

Pretend play: toy kitchen, doctor's kit, dressing-up

Pretend play is at its peak: they no longer copy a single action, they invent whole scenes with a beginning and an end. Any gift that gives them a role works.

A toy kitchen with real little pots and pans, a doctor's bag for treating the whole family, a doll with big-buttoned clothes they can put on and take off by themselves. And the dressing-up box: a cape, a hat and some glasses without lenses are better than a full costume with a rigid mask, which a 3-year-old won't keep on for more than a minute. A big cardboard box, by the way, is still the best car, spaceship and house in history, and it costs nothing.

Talking, telling and looking: books, jigsaws and their very own story

At 3 they speak in sentences, ask “why?” non-stop and begin to recognise their name in writing. Jigsaws of 12 to 24 pieces, a memory game with just a few cards and books with rhyme and repetition (the kind they want “again!” the moment you finish) fit right in with that.

It is also the age when a book with their face has the most pull. In Iraya's figures, 3 is the age with the most covers of Dinosaur Valley: 47 of the 59 that families created for children of that age up to October 2026. The rest were The Sock Planet (9) and, where there's a sibling, The Magic Button (3). From what we see, at 3 they point to themselves on the cover, repeat the name of Pipo, the baby T-Rex looking for his mama, and ask for the same page every night for weeks.

A tip that comes from making a lot of them: at 3 they can already stay still for a second for a front-facing photo. Make sure their eyes and hair are visible, with no dummy, no hat and no hands over their face: that photo is where the character comes from, and before you pay you see the cover to check the likeness. The book is a hardback, 20×20 cm with 33 pages, and costs €39.99.

What's usually surplus to requirements at 3

Toys that do everything by themselves (press a button and watch) last an afternoon. Small parts still end up in their mouths now and then, which is why so many boxes say “3+”: take it seriously. And skip giving more than three or four presents on the same day: at 3 they don't know which one to go for and end up playing with the wrapping paper. If their birthday falls near Christmas, spread the gifts across both dates. If they're still 2, have a look at what to give a 2-year-old; if they're about to turn 4, the guide to what to give a 4-year-old.

Frequently asked questions

Balance bike or tricycle at 3?

A balance bike. A tricycle teaches pedalling but not balance, which is the hard part; start on a balance bike and later they go straight to a pedal bike without stabilisers.

Which jigsaw is right for a 3-year-old?

12 to 24 large pieces, with a picture they know (animals, vehicles). If they finish it alone twice, you can move up a level.

Isn't a book with their face a bit early at 3?

No: they recognise themselves in photos from 2, and at 3 they point to themselves on the cover and ask for their page. It's the age at which most families order the dinosaur book from us.

What photo do I need for the book?

One facing the camera, in good light, with eyes open and hair visible, where the face isn't tiny. One with other people in it is fine: you pick your little one in the photo.
