Gifts for a grandchild: a guide for grandparents, age by age and step by step

This guide is written for grandmas and grandads, who give gifts differently: with more time, with long memories and, often, from another city. It goes by age, because an 8-month-old grandson and a 7-year-old granddaughter don't ask for the same things, and it ends with a step-by-step guide to ordering a book with their face without having the photo at home.

Age first: what delights them at each stage

A clue from our own figures: of the 446 covers families have created at Iraya up to October 2026, 218 are for babies aged 0 and 1. The “keepsake” gift is ordered above all at the start, when everything is a first.

How to order a book with their face without having the photo: step by step on WhatsApp

  1. Ask your son or daughter for a photo of the little one facing the camera, in good light, with no hat or dummy and eyes open. Ask them to send it as a “document” or the original from their camera roll: a photo forwarded many times loses quality and sometimes isn't good enough.
  2. Save it on your phone.
  3. Go to the website, choose the book, type in their name and age and upload the photo. It takes two minutes.
  4. Look at the cover, which we show you for free before you pay. If it doesn't look like them, try another photo; it costs nothing.
  5. Write the dedication for the first page if you like, with your name and the date (up to 140 characters).
  6. Add the address: theirs, for the surprise, or yours, so you can read it together when they visit. You pay by card, Apple Pay or Google Pay, with no need to register, and it arrives in 7 to 9 working days.
  7. If you're not confident with your phone, pass this page to your son or daughter: they'll do it in five minutes and you pay.

The dedication and the book that lasts

What survives house moves is whatever carries your handwriting: the dedication matters more than the story. One short sentence, who it is from and when. The book is a hardback, 20×20 cm with 33 pages, with your grandchild's face and name in the illustrations and the text, and it costs €39.99; a second book in the same order is €29.99. If you have it sent to your house instead of theirs, it becomes “Grandma's book”, the one they ask for every time they come round.

Before you buy, a call to the parents

It isn't spoiling the surprise: it's avoiding the third fire engine, the thousand-piece toy that won't fit in the flat or the screen they don't want at home just yet. They know what excites the child right now and what they still need. And if you live far away, ask for a video call for the moment it is opened: for a grandchild, a gift from the grandparents is above all about that moment. If it's for a baby, have a look at the first birthday gift guide; for Christmas, the order deadlines are in the Christmas and Three Kings' Day guide (Three Kings' Day is 6 January).

Frequently asked questions

Can I order it myself if I don't have the photo?

Yes: ask the parents for a front-facing photo on WhatsApp (ideally as a document, so it keeps its quality), save it on your phone and upload it. Before you pay you see the cover for free.

Will you send it to my grandchildren's house even if I live in another city?

Yes, to any address in Spain, theirs or yours. Delivery costs the same.

What if the baby is only a few months old?

You can, with one honest caveat: under 6 months the cover is a rough guide; from that age on the likeness is much better. If you're aiming for a special date, their first birthday is a better bet.

Is there a book for two grandchildren who are siblings?

Yes, two: The Mystery of the Torn Map and The Magic Button, for siblings aged 2 to 10. Both of them appear, from one photo of the two together or one of each.

How do I pay?

By card, Apple Pay or Google Pay, at the end, once you've seen the cover. There's no need to register or create an account.
