We uploaded the same photo to IrayaBooks, Imagitime, Sparkid, Pixastory and Libro Infantil Mágico. The short answer: if you want a properly illustrated story, with your child drawn into every scene, the same child across all 33 pages and checked by a person before printing, IrayaBooks is the only one of the five that ticks every box.

What makes a good personalised photo book

A personalised book gets read a hundred times. These are the five points we compared them on:

  1. Drawn in, not pasted on. The child is in the same style as the rest of the illustration: a photo face on a cartoon body stands out straight away.
  2. The same child throughout. The same face, the same hair and the same eyes from the first page to the last.
  3. A story written in advance, designed to be read aloud, rather than text made up on the spot.
  4. Checked by a person before it's printed.
  5. A clear price, with hardback, delivery and dedication.

IrayaBooks and Imagitime, with the same photo

We uploaded a photo of Hugo, aged 8, to all five websites from a phone. These are the images they showed before payment, exactly as they came out.

IrayaBooks. While you wait, the photo turns into the character and then into the finished cover. Inside, every page is an illustration that has already been drawn and approved, and only your child changes: that's why it's the same child from start to finish. Before printing, a person checks the book page by page.

Imagitime. It shows the pages as soon as they're generated and lets you choose between three versions of each. The face comes out almost like a photo on a cartoon body, with forehead wrinkles no 8-year-old has. Because each page is generated separately, the child changes: on one page Hugo has brown eyes and on another, blue.

Sparkid, Pixastory and Libro Infantil Mágico, with the same photo

Sparkid. It turns the photo into a 3D doll with a huge head on a small body and places it in almost photographic streets: rather than an illustrated story, it looks like a head stuck onto a scene. Before payment it shows two images with no text and no cover; the one in the basket comes from its catalogue, with a different child.

Pixastory. It shows a single page. The face is recognisable, but it comes out small, with a semi-realistic finish that never quite becomes a drawing.

Libro Infantil Mágico. You choose the theme, style and characters, and the story is written on the spot. But you don't see a single image until you've paid for the digital book (€6.99), and a story made up on the spot isn't a story that has been thought through and checked.

The same story, only your child changes

Every page of our stories is drawn and approved before your photo arrives. Here is the same page with two different children: the scene, the lighting and the style are identical, and each child looks like himself throughout the book. That's also why:

  • The stories are written and illustrated in advance: dinosaurs, superhero, socks…
  • There are stories for a mum and her baby and for two siblings, each with their own photo.
  • We check it by hand and, if you don't like how it's turned out, we redo it for free.
  • The dedication is free and the book comes in Spanish, Catalan, Basque, Galician or English. We explain which photo works best in personalised book with a photo.
