What to give an 8-year-old: ideas by interest, and gifts for independence
At 8 they have opinions and use them: they know what they want, argue about the rules and spot a “babyish” present instantly. The good news is that getting it right is easy if you listen; that's why this guide starts with their interests and ends with something worth as much as a toy at this age: a bit more independence.

By what interests them: a table to get it right
Ask them “what do you most like doing right now?” and find their answer in the left-hand column. At 8, a gift that fits a hobby gets used for months; a generic one, for an afternoon.
| If they like… | Gift that fits | Why it works at 8 |
|---|---|---|
| Science | A simple but real microscope, a beginner's chemistry kit | They can read the instructions and note down what they see |
| Sport | Their own kit for their sport, a ticket to watch their team | Something that's “theirs” rather than handed down from a sibling |
| Music | A ukulele or a small keyboard, plus a term of lessons | They have the patience to practise ten minutes a day |
| Drawing | “Grown-up” materials: good watercolours, fine-tip pens, a spiral sketchbook | They notice the difference in quality and appreciate it |
| Animals | Binoculars, a guide to birds or insects, sponsoring an animal | They can go out searching and sorting on their own |
| Cooking | Their first child-safe knife, an apron with their name, a children's recipe book | They want to do, not watch |
Gifts that build independence
At 8 what they love most is being treated a little more like a grown-up. An alarm clock to get up by themselves, a wristwatch, a hiking rucksack with its own water bottle, a real money box with a little pocket money and the decision about what to spend it on, a compass or a head torch for the next trip to the countryside. They are cheap gifts that say “I trust you”, and at this age that matters more than the price.
If what they want is expensive, you can pool several relatives' presents into one good one instead of splitting it into four middling ones. And look for things that grow with them: a kit that can be expanded, an instrument that will still be useful in three years' time.
A book with their face at 8: who it suits and who it doesn't
Our individual books are designed for children aged 2 to 8, so at 8 they are at the upper limit. The figures confirm it: up to October 2026, families created 8 covers at Iraya for 8-year-olds (4 for the dinosaur book, 4 for the sock one), 7 for 9-year-olds (4 for the sock book, 3 for the dinosaur one) and, at 10, 6 out of 7 are siblings' books. At 10, in practice, what we're asked for is almost always a book in which the older child appears with a younger sibling.
That's where it fits perfectly: in The Magic Button, a button shrinks the two siblings and their bedroom becomes a giant world they have to cross together; in The Mystery of the Torn Map they tear a map while fighting over it and follow the clues to a treasure. Both appear with their faces, the older one reads and the younger one listens, and they're for siblings aged 2 to 10. Just for them, only if they're passionate about the theme or as a keepsake: you can write the dedication on the first page yourself on the website, with the date, and there it stays, in hardback, for when they're grown up. It costs €39.99. For the age before, what to give a 7-year-old; if it's a gift from the grandparents, this guide is written for them.

Frequently asked questions
Toy microscope or a real one at 8?
A real one, but simple, with 40x to 400x magnification and its own light. Toy ones are frustrating because you can't see anything; with a basic one, a drop of puddle water keeps them busy for an afternoon.
How much pocket money at 8?
A small, fixed amount, part of which they decide how to spend. What it teaches isn't the amount but having to choose and wait.
Does an illustrated book still work at 8?
With a younger sibling, yes: both of them appear and the older one reads. Just for them, if they're passionate about the theme; if they already want books without pictures, a chapter book is better.
Can I write the dedication in the book myself?
Yes, before you pay, on the same website: up to 140 characters and four lines, and it's printed on the first page.
