8 gift ideas for a 4-year-old

A first cooperative board game. Simple games where everyone wins or loses together: they learn to wait their turn without tantrums.
Jigsaws of 24 to 48 pieces. A challenge at their level and, as a bonus, a bit of quiet time.
Dressing-up. A dinosaur, an astronaut, a doctor: at this age imaginative play is at its peak.
A bike or scooter. Many move from a balance bike to a pedal bike at around 4 or 5. Always with a helmet.
Arts and crafts: modelling clay, stickers, round-tipped scissors, a stone-painting kit.
Construction sets with smaller pieces, now that they no longer put everything in their mouths.
An experience: children's theatre, a workshop, a visit to a science or dinosaur museum.

How to get a 4-year-old's present right

Look at what they're already passionate about (dinosaurs, cars, animals, dressing up) and go with that. At this age, a gift that connects with their current obsession lasts much longer than the toy of the moment.

If the present is coming from several relatives, a good idea is to share it out: some give the game, others the experience, others the book. That way you don't end up with three similar toys.
